Adopt-A-Child

Funmilayo is the youngest of three children. Her father, who was a carpenter, died in 2006, leaving Funmilayo and her two siblings in the care of her mother. Funmilayos mother was a petty trader who had to abandon her business to take on a regular job due to low patronage of her wares. Funmilayos mother now works as a dishwasher at a restaurant where she earns a daily allowance of N300. This is not a sufficient income to support her childrens educational aspirations. With your financial assistance, Funmilayo will be able to stay in school.

Bose was a month old when she lost her mother. Her aged grandmother who resides on thedark, damp and murky Makoko water has since cared for her. Boses grandmother, who had no source of livelihood, could not afford to send her to school. In 2009, to ensure that Bose received a decent education, Change-A-Life awarded her an educational scholarship. Every day Bose rides the canoe to attend a school located on land in the Makoko area.amp;nbsp;

amp;nbsp;Aanuoluwapo losther mother (who was a nurse and the breadwinner of the family) at the Federal Medical Center Ilaro Ogun State. After the death of her mother, her father (who is a carpenter) took Aanu and her elder sister to their aged maternal grandparentshome for visit but never came back for them. Aanuoluwapo and her elder sister, Boluwatife now reside with their aged maternal grandparents who are both pensioners and cannot afford to support them through school on their meagre pension.

amp;nbsp; Mbuotidem is the last child of four children. On the 23rd of April 2008, when she was barely five years old, Mbuotidem lost her father to the cold hands of death. On the 23rdApril 2009, exactly a year after the demise of her father, armed robbers broke into her mothers shop and carted away all her goods, money and other valuables. Mbuotidems mother lost all her source of livelihood to armed robbers that day. After this, it seemed as though nothing would go well again, however thanks to Change-A-Life educational scheme Mbuotidems education continues.

Katherines education stopped at the nursery level due to the death of her mother. Her grandmother who resides at the slum of Makoko water community adoptedKatherine. However, her grandmother could not afford the cost sending Katherine to school. Katherines education was restored when she was offered a scholarship on the Change-A-Life Educational Scheme. Every day, Katherine paddles the murky Makoko water to attend a school located on land in the Makoko area.

Hannah lost her mother at a tender age. After the demise of her mother, her illiterate maternal grandmother, who resides on Makokos dark and murky water, took her in. Hannah's grandmother is a petty trader and could not afford to support her and at the same time send her to school. In 2009, the founder of Change-A-Life, Ms. Funmi Iyanda, discovered Hannah, who was already past school enrolment age. Ms. Iyanda could easily tell that there were pains in Hannahs eyes. On moving closer to her, all Hannah said to Ms. Funmi Iyanda in the Yoruba dialect was I want to go to school. The same year, Hannah, who had never been to school, was awarded an educational scholarship and enrolled in school by Change-A-Life. Since then Hannah has been performing well in her studies.amp;nbsp;

Samuel's father was one of three men who were hit by stray bullets from the gun of a policeman on the 1st of October 2009. The deceased and his friends were hanging out in front of their mechanic workshop when they were hit. Samuels father was in coma at the intensive care unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for four days before he died. Samuels mother who was a petty trader sold all her goods in order to pay for her late husbands hospital bills. This left her with no source of livelihood after the demise of Samuels father. Samuels mother had no means to support her only child through school. In addition to the educational scholarship awarded to Samuel and to ensure that Samuels family does not disintegrate, Samuels mother was awarded a scholarship by Change-A-Life under its Women In Need business intervention scheme. She is currently training to be a hairstylist. Samuel needs your help to continue to stay in school.

Qudus is the son of the late Ibrahim Olojede who was shot on the 1st of October 2009 (by a happy trigger policeman) while he was hanging out in front of hismechanic shop with his friends. It was a tragedy for Qudus family especially his mother who was a housewife and unskilled. Presently, Qudus mother works as a stylist at a hair salon and her income from this job is not sufficient to sustain her family or cover Qudus school fees. Qudus needs your help to be able to continue his educational goals.

In the year 2000, Uwana was barely a year old when she lost her father. She is from a family of five siblings (one of whom is deaf) and a mother. When Uwanas father died, her mother was instructed to marry Uwanas uncle. This is the family tradition, according to the in-laws. Uwanas mother vehemently refused to do so. As penalty for her mothers refusal, Uwanas fathers family took over her fathers properties and ostracized the six of them, leaving them with nothing. Uwanas mother is a petty trader who sells costume jewelleries. Since the year 2000, she alone has been responsible for her family.amp;nbsp; It has been a struggle to support her family with the meagre income from her petty trading as one of Uwanas brothers is deaf and dumb and requires special care.

of Young Persons to provide business and health intervention in the life of an
HIV positive female victim of human trafficking. A grant was awarded to the
beneficiary, whose name has been withheld to protect her identity, in a
ceremony on July 14, 2010 at the Change-A-Life office in Mende, Lagos.
Ms. Xs story is one of harrowing
pain and sorrow. Her story touched the hearts of many Nigerians when she was
featured on the Talk With Funmi episode Trafficked. In an interview with
Funmi Iyanda, Ms. X narrates how as a young girl, she was tricked out of her
village with the promise of an education in Italy. She tells the story of a
seemingly endless journey of murder, prostitution, deportation and finally
redemption.

Ms. Xs dignity and resilience
even in the face of such tragic circumstances captured the hearts and minds of
people, especially those at Change-A-Life. The Foundation, in keeping with its
mission to intervene in the lives of people with extenuating circumstances of
need, deployed a fact-finding mission to Benin where Ms. X lives, to further
investigate her peculiar challenges and needs.
Through the Women-In-Need scheme,
Ms. X was offered a grant that enables her to develop and grow her business,
providing funding for a shop and the purchase of goods. Women-In-Need also
provides healthcare support so Ms. Xs medical bills will also be covered by
the grant.
Change-A-Life founder Ms. Funmi
Iyanda said: After the interview with Ms. X, the gauntlet was thrown down. It
was clear something had to be done to help Ms. X. Our Women-In-Need scheme is a
direct intervention project that assists battered and downtrodden women,
offering them the support they so desperately need.
The
Change-A-Life Foundation was founded in 2002 by award winning journalist and
television producer Funmi Iyanda to intervene in the lives of deserving people
when they need it the most.
Over
the years, the Foundation has been changing
the lives of children and people through its scholarship, healthcare,
counseling and micro-finance intervention scheme. Change-A-Lifes scholarship
scheme currently supports 98 children.

Change-A-Life and Final Year University of Lagos (Unilag) English Students Mentor Makoko Children

The Change-A-Life foundation as part of its ongoing commitment to educating Nigerian children worked with seventeen final year English Students of Unilag to provide mentorship and English education to over 250 students of Whanyinna Nursery and Primary School, Makoko as part of the English Students community project outing for 2010 tagged Project 400L

Though a public holiday, these bubbly amp;amp; energetic big sisters and brothers came armed with workbooks, writing, visual aids and study books to help educate their less privileged younger ones at theWhanyinna School. Their mission was to offer the children at Whanyinna proper reading, study and pronunciation support.

Executive Director of Change-A-Life, Mrs. Bridget Oyefeso-Odusami speaking at the outing said: Education is the foundation of every society and Change-A-Life remains committed to supporting indigent, hardworking and intelligent students who need that extra help. We at Change-A-Life are so proud of the sacrifice and the contributions made by these seventeen young students from the English Department of University of Lagos. They are indeed giving back to the community in their own little way

Change-A-Life was founded by Funmi Iyanda in 2002 to intervene in the lives of people with potential yet, great need. The Foundation has been awarding scholarships to brilliant but indigent children for over eight years and currently has 98 children on scholarships. Three students of Whanyinna Nursery and Primary School and five teachers are beneficiaries of the Change-A-Life educational scholarship.

Change-A-Life, in conjunction with the
Enterprise Solution Division of MTN Nigeria brought health and hope to children
in the Makoko Water Community in Lagos as part of MTN's 21 days of Y'ello Care.
This year, staff of MTN Nigeria teamed up
with Change-A-Life to provide malaria preventive and curative measures to the
students, staff of Whanyinna Nursery amp;amp; Primary School, Makoko and the
children of Makoko Houses on Lagoon. Whanyinna Nursery and Primary situated
right on the brackish Lagos lagoon, a hot breeding site for mosquitoes.
Deplorable living conditions and lack of proper sanitation facilities also
facilitate the spread of malaria as well as other water-borne diseases within
the Makoko community.
In order to combat the disease, the project provided
anti-malaria drugs to symptomatic children within the school community.
Insecticide treated mosquito nets were also distributed among the students and
children to help prevent mosquito bites. Volunteer doctors were on standby to
educate teachers and children on malaria preventive measures and the importance
of adequate sanitation.
According to Mrs. Bridget Oyefeso-Odusami,
Executive Director of Change-A-Life; Malaria is still the most widespread
disease, killing thousands of children each year in Nigeria. We must all
continue to work hard to combat and eventually eradicate malaria in our
community.
Change-A-Life's mission is to act as a
bridge between people with potential, yet great need and the people, agencies
and organizations that have the capacity to help and are willing to help these
people. The scheme, which is solely not for profit was founded by Funmi Iyanda
in 2002.
Over the years Change-A-Life has affected the lives of many children and
people through its scholarship, healthcare, counselling and micro-finance
intervention scheme. The scholarship scheme currently supports 98 children.
